Respiratory Conditions

Despite optimum medical management, care giving interventions, education and back up support and assistance, COPD and other respiratory exacerbations continue to result in increasing numbers of hospital admissions here in Ireland. Consequently, there is a growing need for other options for COPD patients, to help them manage the burden of their disease in the comfort of their own home with backup support of a designated COPD team. These options should not only aim to control and alleviate symptoms and complications of COPD but also teach patients skills to identify early signs of deterioration in their disease, monitor it, manage it and thus prevent further detrimental exacerbations of their disease. The priority of the respiratory Physio At Home physiotherapy team is to teach these skills & provide these tools to patients who present with an uncomplicated exacerbation of their condition.

Our objectives in this area include:

  • Provide education on the disease process, exacerbation signs and symptoms.
  • Educate patients and their care givers on medication management.
  • Facilitate smoking cessation.
  • Encourage independent functioning, improving quality of life.
  • Liaise effectively with primary care teams and support services.
  • Teach appropriate airway clearance techniques.
  • Encourage early activity and exercise within the patient’s own limitations.
